Samba Schools

Samba schools are carnival associations focused on the annual carnival parade. This parade is the “pretext” for an intense cultural production: costumes, scenography, dance and music. The rhythmic part of the music is performed by the samba school’s bateria, a powerful percussion orchestra that has become one of the symbols of Brazilian culture. Gabriel Lopes

Gabriel Lopes is a professional musician (percussionist and acoustic guitar player) from Rio de Janeiro. He joined the Brazilian band Monobloco in 2000. There he plays in the gigs and teaches in the percussion workshops. He is a researcher of samba school baterias as well and has released two books on the subject.
